Tadpole Rescue
On a recent family walk around our local area, we stumbled across a small pond that was in the process of quickly drying out. What caught our eye was the presence of hundreds of tadpoles that were desperately trying to cling to whatever water was left in the pond.
So we grabbed a small spade and bucket full of pond water, and headed back to scoop up as many tadpoles as we could before relocating them to the larger pond in the local area.
Whilst it was disappointing that we couldn’t relocate all of them, we also saw some visiting Thrushes picking at the ones that we couldn’t get to, no doubt with the intent to feed their young.
Without ponds many species will struggle to move across landscapes and avoid future threats and pressures. It was also an opportunity to highlight to our young daughter the importance of looking after wildlife and intervening when it is appropriate.
